positionality vs identity

making this post in response to circulating claims about "transmasc privilege" and a noticeable gap in some of y'alls understanding of oppression.

positionality can be thought of as the way society perceives and treats you, and what privileges you are afforded accordingly.

identity can be thought of as your internal sense of self.

for most people, the two do not line up perfectly. your positionality depends on what people immediately see, not what you tell them. your positionality may also vary day to day based on a number of factors including but not limited to the people you are surrounded by, the space you are in, and the positionalities and identities of those perceiving you.

privilege is based almost entirely on positionality, not identity.

a good example is the diversity within the transgender community. if you take three transgender men at different stages in their transition they will each have a different positionality. one may have the positionality of a gender conforming cisgender man, the second may have the positionality of a transgender man, the third may have the positionality of a gender conforming cisgender woman. the gendered privileges these three people are afforded are vastly different despite all three of them having an identical gender identity.

if you have the positionality of a certain marginalized group, you will be targeted with the same oppression as them whether or not you share an identity with them. the fact that you don't share the identity doesn't suddenly make that oppression go away. you can be oppressed based on a positionality that does not align with your identity.

okay so i don’t like discourse but what im gathering from most of it is this: “i think my experience as a nonhuman is much more powerful and real than this other group’s identity.” “no actually MY identity is more real and yours isn’t real. and you’re a freak for thinking the way you do.” neither side is right imo. in my past experience, pshifters were seen as dangerous to the community bc it can push a cult-like ideology. i dont necessarily believe this now, but yall aren’t any better than anyone else in this community, okay? back in my day, there were very few of us and we typically stuck together and didn’t inter-fight. i get that there will be disagreements between community members (i disagree all the time w people), but when are yall gonna realize we’re all on the same side? no one is better than the other. we all experience this differently, but that doesn’t mean that experience is wrong or bad. i’m disheartened by the complete lack of empathy and understanding in our world. we talk abt conservatives and how they have no empathy, but what abt us? why do we keep going at each others throats and not stopping and realizing “hm. this creature is completely different than me and has gone through different hardships and lived a different life. why would i assume everyone has to experience the world like me?” im begging for a shred of competence here

i find someone i have blocked and i can't remember exactly why but it was probably contact discourse

i find someone that's blocked me

i go on someone's blog and they seem cool but mention nothing about contact discourse so i have no idea what their stance is like. i am too tired of being disappointed to ask them

i see an anti contact blogger but they kinda lean neutral and constantly reblog / are friends with pro/neu contacts

and when you try to avoid pro-contact entirely you get

Do you ever see a discourse post calling out someone for genuinely bad behavior and it seems legitimate, but OP says things in the post that are just as deranged if not worse, leading you to block both parties?

since theres already a lot of debate and serious discussion about ableism and media literacy and other topics going on throughout and about the mouthwashing fandom, i wanna take a second to remind you all not to take any negative feelings about the fanbase out on the game's developers because creators cannot control their fanbase's actions and in most cases are not responsible for them. to my knowledge there hasnt been like a massive uproar of people harassing wrong organ for how people have been interacting with the game but i think we should keep it that way. thanks

I like community history and I understand that pointing out that an identity or concept isn't new can be important in conversations about it. But at the same time I do not care for the historical argument when it comes to discourse over "validity", just as I do not care for the recency argument against such "validity". We are all constantly exploring and learning and such things necessitate language to communicate our concepts with, even if they can only be done clumsily and imperfectly – and so it does not matter whether a word or label or identity or concept is "new". Yeah, some things, some words are going to be new. That's how the world works. That's how learning works. That's how progress works. That's how language works. Saying a word shouldn't be used because it's new is like saying a fruit shouldn't be eaten because it's red; it's a complete non-issue and non-sequitur to any actual discussion of the concept or experience that this word names. "This identity didn't exist a year ago" so why does it exist now? Because someone needed this word. And that is all the reason needed for a word's existence

Arguments about which character from Helluva Boss is actually the worst and which one is an uwu innocent bean never did anything wrong? Once again, I love to scroll past them and then infodump to my partner about the half-glimpsed arguments. I love that my fyp will occasionally serve me the most unhinged takes about eternity collars being public indecency. How would I live without this shit.

Meanwhile on here I have like all the discourse tags blocked: I'll still occasionally do a deep dive on something I find interesting, or if I want to keep up with the old interests, but I don't allow it to pop up randomly on my dash.

I don’t get why Alastor is being so unfairly criticized on using Voodoo imagery when Vivzie has clearly stated how he’s directly influenced by Dr. Facilier in Princess and the Frog Disney movie. Yet, nobody criticizes the Disney movie that she is just directly referencing? If it’s so wrong then we really should be more harsh on the Disney movie many children had watched, no? I mean, we’ve done so for Aladdin and Pocahontas already, what harm would one more inaccurate cultural storytelling debunked video?

It’s so disingenuous that many of these people don’t even mention the Disney movie in relation to Alastor when that is the biggest reason to why he’s using Voodoo. It’s literally the reason why he’s using it. Idk, i just want Disney to be blasted more. I mean, I’d copy and paste cool things I’ve seen in other media onto my own OCs too, it’s not fair!
